"Oral corticosteroids, such as prednisone, can help lessen swelling, redness and itching — but are usually used only a short term for severe hives or angioedema because they can cause serious side effects. Topical corticosteroids usually aren't effective for chronic hives. Corticosteroids can weaken your immune system, making it easier for you to get an infection or worsening an existing infection you already have."
— Mayo Clinic on Chronic Hives (Urticaria)
Allergic reaction often manifests in skin rash or hives (urticaria), and sometimes deep skin swelling (angioedema). Hives are outbreaks of swollen, itchy, pale red bumps, patches, or welts on the skin that appear suddenly as a result of allergic reaction. They could appear anywhere on the body, including the face, lips, tongue, throat, or ears, varying size from small bumpy spots to large patches known as plaques.
Deep skin swelling or angioedema is similar to hives, nonetheless the swelling occurs beneath the skin instead of on the surface. Angioedema is characterized by deep swelling, most often around the eyes and lips and sometimes on the genitals, hands, and feet. Swelling rarely occurs inside of the throat. If the swelling obstructs the airflow, it can become life threatening.
For acute urticaria and/or angiodema, hives or swelling last less than six weeks. The most common causes are foods, medicines, insect bites, latex, or infections. Insect bites and internal disease may also be responsible. In some people, hives can be triggered by stress, sun exposure, exercise or temperature changes.
For chronic urticaria and/or angioedema, hives or swelling last more than six weeks. The cause of this type of hives is usually more difficult to identify than those causing acute urticaria and/or angioedema. The causes can be similar to those of acute urticaria but can also include autoimmunity, chronic infections, hormonal disorders, and malignancy.
Many people with chronic hives are diagnosed with chronic idiopathic urticaria, which is persistent hives with an unknown cause. Many have gone through a battery of tests, including dermatological, allergic, rheumatologic, auto-immune, viral, Lyme Disease tests, without finding the cause of the chronic, itchy, painful rash or swelling appearing in the body.
Generally, during the body’s inflammatory and allergic responses hives are produced when histamine and other compounds are released from mast cells (normally found in the skin). Histamine causes fluid to leak from the local blood vessels, leading to swelling in the skin. For chronic hives, oral antihistamines and steroid creams only give temporary relief and the rash keeps coming back.
Asian Wisdom for De-Sensitizing the Body to Broad-Spectrum Allergens:
By taking this comprehensive and balanced approach, one can simultaneously target both the symptoms and root cause to help the body re-establish a healthy immune balance, thereby reducing the chance of reoccurrence of the allergic attacks.
"Your immune system is your interface with the environment. If it is healthy and doing its job right, you can interact with germs and not get infections, with allergens and not have allergic reactions, with carcinogens and not get cancer. A healthy immune system is the cornerstone of good general health.

A family is a unit composed not only of children but of men, women, an occasional animal, and the common cold - Ogden Nash Every year the Center for Disease Control (CDC) expects that 5% to 20% of the population will get the flu and that 200,000 people will be hospitalized because of it. Even more than that will get a cold. Is it inevitable?
"People are taking two, three, sometimes four different medications at a time to relieve their symptoms quickly and effectively because they are increasingly unsatisfied with their allergy medications. This can be a very costly, dangerous and frequently ineffective solution to treating bothersome symptoms," Dr. Alpen Patel, a medical-scientific council member of the Asthma and Allergy Association
of America.
Eczema is a dermatological condition that affects millions of people around the world; and in the US 1 in 8 people suffers from eczema. The common symptoms of this skin condition (medically categorized under dermatitis) are inflammation, redness, itching and dryness of the skin. Excessive itching gives the skin a scaly appearance with a leathery texture due to thickening of the skin layers, often on hands,
feet, joints, and the neck.
