More About Power Memorial Academy
PMA was founded in 1931 when, at the request of the Archbishop of the New York Diocese, a new community of Irish Christian Brothers took over the five attached row houses on 124th Street that had previously been occupied by the Bothers other school, All Hallows. They named it Power Memorial Academy in memory of Monsignor Power who had originally invited the Irish Christian Brothers to this country and who had died in 1926.

By 1938 the schools student body had increased to such an extent that a new location was required. A building at 161 W 61st Street, which had previously housed the NY Nursery & Childs Hospital, was purchased as the new school site.
Power remained at that location until 1984 when it was closed due to the building’s deteriorating condition In 1989 Rich Coppolino, a former teacher at Power organized a reunion for all former students, at a small locale in NYC. The response was so overwhelming that following reunions had to be held in a much larger venue. At the 2003 reunion Terry McAdams, class of 1952, announced that he had petitioned the NYC St. Patrick’s Day Committee for permission for PMA to march in the parade, and it had been granted. After a nineteen year absence Power Memorial Academy proudly returned to the 2004 NYC St. Patrick’s Day Parade, represented by 250 alumni and faculty. Impressed by the response and spirit displayed by the parade march, a committee was established to explore the possibility of creating a formal alumni association. In September of that year the first officers of PMAAA were elected and the association became a reality.
